Taking on a Commission
The idea of a commission for a bespoke artwork came to me with a recent enquiry about a sold original. There was a deep red colour in the original piece that the client was attracted to and wanted as a central part of a new piece to be created uniquely for them.
Initial discussions identified a colour palette, from which I sourced fabrics including one I matched from an item the client supplied. We discussed the emotion the artwork should evoke, of a bright day and an open spacious, vibrant semi-abstract feel. The client also specified that they wanted simplicity without too much detailed stitch.
As a starting point for the design composition I sent them landscape photographs to choose from.
The collaboration aspect of creating a commission is very different to creating one off pieces to my own design, but it is also fun, with the voice of another person in the design process guiding some decisions. The clients for this recent commission were friends and a delight to work with.
Regular communication was key with photograph updates and a couple of visits to view work in progress.
I would conclude that it felt like a ‘design brief ‘ more than an art approach in terms of the need to find solutions to a specific set of requirements and having set parameters to work within. Definitions of art and design however are open to many interpretations!
I embrace this collaborative approach to creating and find it a really enjoyable process. If you have a special landscape or garden image that you would like translating for a personal gift or piece of art please get in touch.
I love making personalised artwork and seeing the pleasure it brings when delivered to the client and the space it has been specially created for.
